To the Editor:
Let's see, the same city engineer Mr.
Bill Baker and most of the same city commissioners that approved
the new budget and could not find One Penny to save the taxpayers,
now gets congratulated for finding $200,000 from just one project?
And what do they want to do with this money? Paint a landing strip
down the middle of Main Street. Will they be painting our bricked
streets yellow, also? Is there any other city in Pinellas County
that lacks such appreciation of the natural beauty of nature or the
idea that less is more than Safety Harbor?
There are more street signs, sandwich
boards, foot traffic signs, per running foot in our downtown core
of Main Street and Philippe Parkway, than at the Oldsmar flea
market. Who's taking credit for that Mr. Mayor? Tree City, no.
Sign City yes, and cheap metal at that. The museum recently had to
beg local businesses for a new metal mailbox. Luckily they were
able to match the nearby cheap no turn and city signs.
Perhaps the "Mayor want-to-bee's" and all
the commissioners need to review all the budget items again. Maybe
there is more savings that could and should be made for us
taxpayers.
Let's be clear, nothing is nicer to look
at than Mother Nature. Why not timber and rock boulders at the
entrance way to the bridge over Mullet Creek. No Plastic! No Paint!
Or better yet, why not invite local artists to create lasting
artifacts to surround the bridge entranceway, and gain some class
to our city. We our proud of our downtown fountain. No sign needed
to find it. And, while we are at it, let's let the artists design
a better mailbox for the museum that reflects our city history and
ambiance.
We have $200,000 or more to use wisely.
Will we?
