'Taste' Takes Tech Café Into New Traditions E-mail
Tuesday, 01 May 2007

Taste Café was a concept dreamed up the day Robin Hirschberger and his daughters Debbie and Renee purchased the downtown Safety Harbor cafe from his nephew Dan Gerson and his wife Larri. The concept was of a cool, relaxed atmosphere that would welcome newcomers and neighborhood friends alike; an atmosphere that would keep the tradition of comfort that the Gersons had founded.

Renovations created a look that has amazed both regulars and new customers, Renee said. "We kept the heart of the Tech Cafe that everyone in Safety Harbor loves, and gave it a new 'Tasty' body!"

The café's tradition of displaying artwork created by Florida artists remains an eye-catching feature and complements the new colorful interior. The current exhibit presents a selection of original paintings by two artists: watercolorist Ross Caputo and pastelist Karen Baker.

Celery colored walls, tangerine chairs and grass green couches add special punch, without being over the top, she added. A new counter extends into the previous seating area, but somehow makes the cafe seem twice the size.

Robin creates amazing and unique sandwiches that cater to everyone, vegan, vegetarian, lactose intolerant or just hungry. New additions to the menu include the Garden of Edam, a toasty combination of edam cheese, apricot preserves and apple slices. Or Gilligan's Dream, a scrumptious mix of ground ginger, mayo, chopped onion and roasted red pepper spread on a baguette of roast beef. For less adventurous "tasters," the café still offers favorites such as the Wasabi Tuna and The Happy Greek. Everything at Taste is made fresh, so it does take a few minutes to get it ready.

"You can have it fast, or you can have it good," Robin laughingly said. Homemade soups also are on the menu with a daily variety, always including Robin's Famous Chicken Noodle and Almost Minestrone.

Also available are Desserts By Michelle, which provides all of Taste's desserts, baked fresh in-house.Desserts are available for pre-ordering and, of course, to go. Try a Taste gelato outside while enjoying the new courtyard furniture.

The café caters all size events and also delivers lunch orders to Safety Harbor.

Taste also is continuing the Tech Café tradition of live music on Fridays and Saturdays, but now has added live music on Thursdays. The café showcases musical talent from the community.

Hours are 7:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Mon.-Thurs.; 7:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Fri.; and, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Sat.

Taste is located in Suite E, 500 Main St., Safety Harbor. Call 727-723-1116.
