Tell Us What Unusual Names Your Pets Have E-mail
Tuesday, 01 May 2007

Dear Nanny Fran,

I enjoyed your column last month about pet names. What is the most unusual pet name you have encountered?

I've received many comments on that column and have heard many unusual names. For example, Barkly B. Bearykins is my dear friend. At times he is Beezer Weezer Deezer Neezerkins and at other times he is simply Beezer or Mr. B. I also have Jack and Jill. At times they are Jackie Bean and Jilly Bean, silly willy nilly bean or simply The Bean Kids! These are simply various terms of endearment that I use whenever I am walking them and talking to them or simply just sitting still and loving them.

The names Barkly and Jack and Jill are not all that unusual; however, recently I was speaking with a lady who told me of a dog who had the name of Rolodex! Whew! Poor guy! When I heard that I remarked that I was curious about how that name came about. She was unaware.

A lovely vet tech I know told me about her Skyler, a beautiful white kitty with blue eyes. He originally came into her home with the name Skyler. As time went by one of her other kitties was exercising territorial rights from time to time and making Skyler's life uncomfortable at ground level. Skyler learned that if he went on top of the book case or armoire in the living room he was safe from Mr. or Ms. Nasty Pants. As he spent a good deal of time lounging at the higher elevations he acquired the name of Skyscraper. Now he is simply known as Scraper. Yes, "Scraper." This evolved from the "family dynamics" at play in the home.

I'm sure there many other "pet" names that have a story behind them. Tropical Breeze readers are encouraged to submit their own stories about their fur children's unique names. Sometimes small children in the home simply cannot pronounce the name and the pet acquired a new name via the child. I know one little girl who was always "Chug" to her grandfather because she called a "Hug" a "Chug" at a very young age. The name stuck for life.

Please submit a picture of your pet or pets along with the story of how the name came into being. We'll try to include as many stories as possible in future columns. You may email your story with a picture to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Submissions will become the property of Tropical Breeze Publications, Inc. and Never Say Goodbye, Inc. We're looking for most unusual name, most endearing name, etc. We especially are looking forward to your stories and pictures.
