Safety Harbor City Commissioners
undoubtedly are rejoicing this morning, Aug. 24, to have received
the blessing of the St. Petersburg Times Clearwater Times editorial
board. The Times discovered this week that the commission had "this
week approved a fair solution" to the regulating of sandwich boards
in downtown Safety Harbor.
All very nice, but the editorial (and
previous news coverage) also should have noted that this was final
passage (after two votes and several hearings during the past two
months) of essentially the same regulations that led to an earlier,
erroneous, screaming headline that Safety Harbor was "banning"
sandwich boards. Never was the case, nor was that seriously
discussed as an option.
The Times distorted what has been a very
difficult issue between the city and merchants and then
condescended to pat the city on the back for finding a solution
that did not include the draconian measures only its reports had
said were being considered.
