Local Author Opens Dunedin Ice Cream And Candy Shop E-mail
Wednesday, 01 August 2007
Local author Mary Staller recently opened a new ice cream and candy shop,Sandy Gull’s Sweets, at 501 Main Street in Dunedin. The shop is named after the lead character,Sandy Gull, from her book “Meet Sandy Gull,” the first in a series of four children’s rhyming picture books. Illustrated by artist Jim Hunt of Annapolis, MD, the bright and colorful pictures are seen throughout the shop as a mural as well as on tee-shirts and advertising. The shop’s theme revolves around the stories. Each of the books will include a Florida bird and have a moral that children can learn from. The other main character, Mickey, from the Meet Sandy Gull story book is a caricature of the author’s four-year-old grandson, Michael, who is a resident of Dunedin..Staller believes strongly in community involvement and happy families. To that end, a focal point in her shop is a wishingwell fountain that features a seagull in the center and a pelican by its side. A sign next to the fountain invites everyone to make a wish for injured and sick birds to get well and all proceeds go to the Suncoast Bird Sanctuary located in Indian Shores. Staller also participated in the second annual Heart to Heart reunion in March at Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, donating 100 books and signing them for the children. Sandy Gull’s Sweets was a sponsor for the Opening Day festivities at the Blue Jay’s stadium giving out bags of candy and gift baskets that were presented to fans by the Blue Jay’s mascot.Staller also donated baskets to the Masquerade Mingle that was held at the Firehouse Gallery in Downtown Dunedin, a fund raising event for the Academy DaVinci Elementary School for the arts located in Dunedin. Staller’s shop features 100% natural “Old Meeting House” ice cream, made in Tampa. The shop also has hand-dipped chocolates and novelty candy including nostalgic candies. Call 727-738-1358.
