Under the leadership of Music Director
Stefan Sanderling, The Florida Orchestra's upcoming 40th
anniversary season is just around the corner with music by Grieg,
Mahler, Mozart and others as well as hits from Hollywood, opera and
Broadway.
The Holland America Line morning Coffee
Concert series kicks off with violinist and Sphinx Competition
Winner Robert Switala in Saint-Saens' electric "Introduction and
Rondo Capriccioso" at the Mahaffey Theater at the Progress Energy
Center in St. Petersburg at 11 a.m. Thurs., Sept. 27. The program
also includes light orchestral fare and overtures by Rossini,
Mozart, Johann Strauss, Jr. and others. Concertgoers also enjoy
complimentary coffee and donuts and can attend a pre-concert talk
starting one hour before curtain time.
The Raymond James Super Pops series opens
with a "Salute to The Duke John Wayne," featuring music from such
signature films as "True Grit," "The Comancheros," "The Alamo" and
others. To add to the experience, images from his films will be
projected on a large screen over the orchestra, and Pops Conductor
Richard Kaufman will share fun anecdotes from his many years of
working on film music in Hollywood. Country fiddler Thomas Demer
will also add to the festivities with some dazzling fiddle tunes.
Concerts are Sept. 28, 29 and 30 in Tampa, St. Petersburg and
Clearwater, respectively.
For aficionados of symphonic favorites,
Stefan Sanderling launches the Progress Energy Masterworks series
with Canadian pianist Louis Lortie performing Griegs' ever-popular
and explosively romantic "Piano Concerto" on a program with
Mahler's surging "Symphony No. 1, Titan." With more than 30
recordings to his name, Lortie has performed under the baton of
such renowned conductors as Lorin Maazel, Seiji Ozawa, Kurt Masur,
Charles Dutoit, Kurt Sanderling, Neeme Järvi, Sir Andrew
Davis, Hans Vonk, Wolgang Sawallisch and Osmo Vänskä.
These concerts are Oct. 4, 6 and 7 in Tampa, St. Petersburg and
Clearwater, respectively.
