Tarpon Springs Gallery Launches First 'Sponge Painting' Contest E-mail
Saturday, 01 September 2007

Art on the Docks, a gallery on the sponge docks in Tarpon Springs, will launch its first annual "sponge painting" contest in October. Most folks are familiar with sponge painted walls, but these are sponge paintings to be hung on walls.

Cash and prizes totaling more than $200 will be awarded to the three most popular entries as determined by votes cast by visitors to the gallery.

"No tasteful submissions will be turned away, although there is a size limitation of 20"x24" maximum," said gallery owner and event promoter, June Middleton. "Entries will be accepted while space allows on a first come, first serve basis." Also the entire painting must be painted using sponges.

The gallery receives thousands of visitors a year from every walk of life and from all over the world, including of course, the Tampa Bay area. Aspiring artists have the opportunity to display their work to a world community. There is an entry fee of $5.

Sponge paintings in oils, watercolors or acrylics are welcome. Completed works will be accepted at Art on the Docks, 735 Dodecanese Blvd., Mon.-Fri., Oct. 1-5 only. For more information call 727-943-9298. The gallery is open every day except Tuesday.
