People don't talk much about soccer. They talk about football, baseball, basketball and Paris Hilton in jail. That is until David Beckham came to America. Then people started talking about soccer and its place in American sports.

Soccer is the number one participation sport in America but a staggering number of elite athletes move onto other sports in their teens. As the world's most popular player, Beckham might be the first of a line of stars coming to energize Major League Soccer and reverse that trend.

African-American athletes in particular make this decision and players like Kobe Bryant, Chad Johnson and Deuce McAllister become football or basketball stars instead of soccer stars.

"Black People Don't Play Soccer" is the first comprehensive exploration of the historical, cultural and economic reasons black Americans approach soccer from a uniquely American perspective. In this interesting and at times controversial probe into the world of soccer, Robert Woodard vividly describes how Black America is the untapped resource which can transform the U.S. from a soccer "mid-major" into a soccer power.

"Black People Don't Play Soccer" will be released by JimSam Inc. Publishing of Tampa in spring of 2008.
