Yacht captains step aside; a warm-hearted group of caretakers will have the St. Petersburg Yacht Club filled to the brim the weekend of Oct. 5-7.  The Guardian Association of Pinellas County is holding their 10th Annual Expo in the waterfront venue.  The Expo draws over 200 people every year for the all day event.   “We attract guardians, attorneys, social service personnel, and nurses from all over the region.   People attend our annual expo to get continuing education credits or to discuss important issues,” says Correy Pastore, President of the Guardian Association of Pinellas County, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.   For the past several years Joel and Christine Kriley have been making the trip from Spring Hill to St. Petersburg for the Expo.   “I've never gone to the Expo and not gotten something from it.  It seems like, I’m experiencing a problem and a presenter is talking about that very issue, or I’m listening to a speaker and a month later I’m facing the same situation they discussed,” says Joel Kriley, who has been a guardian for six years.
A class on the subject of 'When to Butt Out” came in handy for Mr. Kriley when one of his wards, an Alzheimer’s patient who had lost his wife, began dating in the nursing home.  The ward met another Alzheimer’s patient and the two became inseparable. The couple held hands while walking to the dining room and they visited with one another constantly.

Because of training from the Guardian Association, Kriley approached the guardian of the other Alzheimer’s patient and the guardians both agreed to ‘butt out’.

“No matter what session you attend while at the expo, if you don’t need it that day, you’re going to need it within a month,” says Kriley.

This year, the expo is featuring classes on Ethics and Professionalism, Patients’ Rights, Mental Illness, the Developmentally Disabled, and many others.  During lunch the Honorable Linda R. Allan, a judge in the Sixth Judicial Circuit, will give advice on Getting Good Results in Court.  Attendees are eligible to earn continuing education hours required for their profession.

The Guardian Association Expo will be at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, Friday, October 5th from 7:45am to 5:00 pm.  For more information and details on how to register for the Expo visit the Guardian Association website at www.guardianassociation.org.
