“Practice Your Escape Plan”
October is National Fire Prevention month and Palm Harbor Fire Rescue encourages parents to create and practice their home fire safety plan. No one is too young or too old to have a plan, so pull together everyone in your house one evening in October and create your family’s escape routes. Creating a plan is as easy as 123, just follow these steps below:1.Pull together everyone in your house and take a walk through, inspecting all possible exits and escape routes.2.Draw the plan on paper noting two ways out of each room and an outdoor meeting place such as a mailbox or a neighbor’s home.3.Practice, Practice, Practice: Conduct a fire drill by sounding your smoke alarm (by pressing the test button) and crawl low under the smoke to your safe meeting place outside. Once you’re out, stay out and call 911
Remember, everyone should participate! If there are infants, older adults, or family members with mobility limitations, make sure someone is assigned to assist them in the fire drill and in case of an emergency.
Assign a backup person too, in case the designee is not home during the emergency.
